
Each year ALTA recognizes and rewards distinguished service to library development and literacy through the presentation of the Trustee Citation and Literacy Awards. Two Annual Conference travel grants are awarded through the ALTA/Gale Award for new trustees, and ALTA recognizes library benefactors through the annual Major Benefactor Award. Chicago – The Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), named Barbara Prentice and Donald W. Green as the 2008 Trustee Citation award winners.
American Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), named Barbara Prentice and Donald W. Green as the 2008 Trustee Citation award winners. The ALA Trustee Citation, established in 1941 to recognize public library trustees for distinguished service to library development, symbolizes and honors the best contributions and efforts of the estimated 60,000 American citizens who serve on library boards.ALTA member Barbara Prentice is one of the two winners of this year’s Trustee Citation Award. Prentice has proven library board leadership ability at the national, state, and local levels. Long-time ALTA leader and past president, Dr. Barbara Prentice has worked tirelessly on the Pima County Public Library’s Advisory, Friends and the Foundation boards. She has been an advocate for the library on many issues, including becoming a library district and fundraiser for the 21st Century Library Campaign. Prentice was also founder of the statewide Friends, helping to support many smaller communities to create Friends groups. Prentice has created a record of leadership and achievement in service on
The awards will be presented during the Opening General Session of the ALA Annual Meeting in Chicago. During each ALA Annual Meeting, up to two trustees are presented with citations in recognition of distinguished service to library development

Major Benefactors Honor Award
The 2003 Major Benefactors Honor Award Announced!
Congratulations to the Bank of Southside Virginia and the Clements family!
This year’s ALTA Major Benefactor Award is a two-pronged pat on the back to the Clements family of Carson, Virginia. Both their bank (The Bank of Southside Virginia, and they personally are being honored for their donation of funds and land for the new Carson Depot library in Hopewell, Virginia. The Major Benefactors Honor Award was established to give recognition to individuals, families or corporate bodies who have made major benefactions to public libraries. The award is presented locally, and consists of two specially prepared citations for the recipient(s) and the beneficiary library. The significance of the gift will be measured from the point of view of the recipient library, rather than by the size of the gift alone.

The ALTA Literacy Award
ALTA Announces Literacy Award Winner-
Congratulations to William Wilson!
William Wilson is the winner of this year’s Literacy Award, to be presented at the ALTA SOS Luncheon on Sunday, June 27, 2004. This award is an acknowledgement of his commitment to directly preserve and further literacy in his state. Kudos to Mr. Wilson for his achievement and steadfast work! The ALTA Literacy Award is given annually to a library trustee or an individual who in a volunteer capacity has made a significant contribution to addressing the problem of illiteracy in the United States, particularly as it relates to the role of the public library.

ALTA/GALE Oustanding Trustee Conference Grant
ALTA Announces the 2003 ALTA/Gale Grant Winner-
Congratulations to Joel Hondorp and Karen Dyer!
Congratulations to Joel Hondorp and Karen Dyer, the recipients of this year’s ALTA/Gale Outstanding Trustee Grant. This grant enables public library trustees to attend the ALA Annual Conference for the first time. A grant of $750 each is awarded annually to two public library trustees who have demonstrated qualitative interests and efforts in supportive service of the local public library. Made possible by an annual gift from Gale Research, Incorporated, the grant is administered by the Association for Library Trustees and Advocates, a division of the American Library Association. A formal presentation to winners will be made at the ALTA Opening Session.
