ACRL Information Literacy Initiatives
For those working in Information Literacy, ACRL has programs in the areas of:
Spearheading many of these programs is the Institute for Information Literacy.
Professional Development
Immersion Program
Recognizing the need for librarians to learn how to teach, the national and regional immersion programs began in summer 1999. With the goal of providing an in-depth training and learning opportunity for both new librarians in instructional positions as well as those instruction librarians in charge of building information literacy programs.
Assessment
Standards
Provides a framework for assessing the information literate individual.
Best Practices
The Best Practices Project involved developing criteria for assessing information literacy programs and identifying model programs. Characteristics of Programs of Information Literacy that Illustrate Best Practices: A Guideline was approved by the ACRL Board in June 2003.
NSSE 2006 IL Experimental Items
Nine tables of data referred to in the July/August 2007 C&RL News article, "Information literacy-related student behaviors: Results from the NSSE items" reporting the results of a project of the Institute for Information Literacy.
Instructional Development
Instruction Section
The Mission of the Instruction Section of the ACRL is to foster the profession of academic and research librarianship and to enhance the ability of academic and research librarians involved in bibliographic instruction to serve effectively the library and information needs of current and potential library users
The Education Committee of the Section recently conducted a survey on topics of interest for Continuing Education.
Standards Toolkit
Takes you step by step through the Standards, and offers examples of using the Standards.
Objectives for Information Literacy Instruction: A Model Statement for Academic Librarians
The Instruction Section Objectives flesh out and make more specific the Standards, Performance Indicators, and Outcomes of the Competency Standards.
Partnerships for Information Literacy
Community Partnerships
The overall goal of this effort is to build information literacy community partnerships. These partnerships will bring together librarians from school, academic, public and special libraries with community members and organizations to help prepare the public to utilize information efficiently and effectively
Building on the "Blueprint For Collaboration," the joint AASL/ACRL Information Literacy Task Force will focus on how to prepare K-20 students to be information literate.
TLT Group
Our goal is to help educational institutions improve teaching and learning by making more thoughtful use of information technology. We offer tools, information, training, and consulting that accelerate educational improvement while also helping to control the costs and ease the stresses of change.
PRIMO: Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online Database
A partnership between the Coalition for Networked Information and ACRL. This project intends to provide an effective method for librarians to display and share instructional materials that they have designed for teaching about seeking and evaluating information in a networked environment.
