Meet the AASL Staff

Below is a listing of current AASL staff with information about their responsibilities. Take a minute to "meet the staff" and find out an interesting fact about each one of them. This month's question, If you could be any children's book character, who would you be?

Executive Director
Julie Walker

As a non-voting member of both the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, Julie serves as the primary liaison to these groups. She works with other program supervisors -- Deputy Director, Manager of Communications, Manager of Professional Development -- to ensure that staff liaisons provide knowledgeable, efficient and timely service to those who serve as chairs of AASL committees and task forces. Julie also serves as staff liaison to the NCATE Coordinating Committee and works closely with the AASL Alliance for Association Excellence.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? The elephant from "Six Blind Men and the Elephant"

Deputy Executive Director
Allison Cline

Responsible for the day-to-day management of the division, including personnel and member relations. Allison oversees the implementation and monitoring of the strategic plan and the Longitudinal Study (School Libraries Count!) and development of the study's on-line tool.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? Winnie the Pooh

Manager, Communications
Jonathan West

Jonathan manages AASL's communications: journals, monographs, the Web site, press releases, etc. He is responsible for developing new publications and digital initiatives and overseeing marketing and member recruitment.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? Mulch Diggums, Artemis Fowl series

Manager, Professional Development
Kelly Bishop

Kelly manages the development of many educational programs AASL offers each year. She oversees the educational elements of national conference, the national institute, online courses, licensed institutes, as well as ALA Annual and Midwinter Conferences.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? Pippi Longstocking

Manager, Programs & Affiliate Relations
Jennifer Habley

Jen's main role is coordinating the standards and guidelines implementation plan, Learning 4 Life. She serves as the staff liaison to the Affiliate Assembly and works with Julie on the Partnership for 21st-Century Skills state leadership committee. Jen is also the liaison between AASL and outside partnerships.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? Ramona Quimby

Meeting & Special Events Planner
Brenda Dreier, CMP

Brenda has overall responsibility for the management side of AASL national conference, the national institute, and our presence at ALA conferences. Her duties for these events include budgeting, onsite logistics, and oversight of registration, housing and exhibits. She is also responsible for site selection for future AASL conferences.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? Madeline 

Communications Specialist
Melissa (Jones) Jacobsen

Melissa's main responsibilities include managing the AASL Web site, writing press releases, overseeing 2.0 tools (e.g., wikis, blogs, AASL in Second Life (SL)) and acting as staff liaison to several committees. She also writes and produces AASL Hotlinks at the beginning of every month and submits weekly posts to the AASL Blog.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? Claudia "Claud" Lynn Kishi, The Baby-sitters Club series

Marketing Specialist
Andrea Parker

Andrea coordinates the marketing and promotion of division programs, products, events and services, and to increase awareness, participation and sales. As Managing Editor of Knowledge Quest, she manages the production of the journal, control costs, keeping production on schedule, and identifying and implementing changes to make the journal more attractive to readers. Andrea manages AASL's awards program, which culminates each year in a luncheon at Annual Conference honoring that year’s winners.

If you could be any children's book character, who would you be? Violet Baudelaire

Program Coordinator, Governance & Finance
Jordan Mack
Ext. 4382
Jordan is responsible for the governance and financial aspects of AASL. When Jordan has her governance hat on, she provides support for the AASL Board of Directors and Committees. This includes assisting with committee appointments, arranging meetings, and writing minutes. When Jordan changes hats to finance coordinator, she processes incoming and outgoing checks, member reimbursements, and assists Julie with budget development and monitoring.
