@ your library Campaign for School Libraries

This initiative is part of the overall ALA Campaign for America's Libraries. The @ your library school library campaign has begun its preliminary work, so the initiative will be ready to be launched at the AASL 11th National Conference in Kansas City, Mo, in October. Its mission is to enable AASL to increase public awareness of the significant contributions made by library media professionals through school library programs to further the academic achievement and life long learning of our nation's students.

Internal and external focus groups and the AASL Board have provided the @ your library school library campaign Special Committee with many key messages from which an extensive marketing campaign can be created.

The complete report of the qualitative research conducted by KRC Research is available online (PDF File). The qualitative research was conducted to test communications language and messages that best fits the goals for this effort.

3M Library Systems, a major supporter of the overall ALA Campaign for America's Libraries, the @ your library campaign for college and research libraries, and the @ your library school library campaign, will be assisting AASL in its efforts to produce marketing tools for AASL members to become trainers in this major public awareness endeavor.

I will continue to keep the AASL membership apprised of the progress of this campaign through the year ahead.

There is a way in which the membership can become involved almost immediately. The @ your library school library campaign Special Committee would like you to share positive experiences/stories involving your programs and services -- scenarios with your students. These can be e-mailed to me at hselver@optonline.net. This will enable the Special Committee to put an exciting face of our profession in front of our many audiences who need to be reached: parents, students, teachers, and administrators (including principals).

Collegially,
Harriet Selverstone, Chair
